2008 was a year of bailouts, 2009 is a year of hope

This year has been one of government bailouts and it's also been the year of economic uncertainty - both on the larger scale of the market, and on the more personal scale of lost jobs and cutbacks. Our government gave the banking industry a check for $700 billion, an astronomical figure, and the kind of money that we simply do not have to lend out.

Fees on the rise

Do not be alarmed by a possible enrollment-fee increase of at least $6 per unit sometime next year for California community colleges.

As of press time, there is no official news release about the fees returning $26 per unit-a price last paid in the summer of 2007-but there has been a speculation it will rise to $30 as soon as July 1 of next year.

Women are from Venus and men are from Mars. In the case of Southwestern College, the governing board seems to be on Mars while we are here in Chula Vista.

When Southwestern College President Dr. Raj K. Chopra was offered a $15,000 raise from the governing board in the midst of one of the college's worst budget crisis ever, it is safe to say the campus community thought he would handle it differently.
