This year has been one of government bailouts and it's also been the year of economic uncertainty - both on the larger scale of the market, and on the more personal scale of lost jobs and cutbacks. Our government gave the banking industry a check for $700 billion, an astronomical figure, and the kind of money that we simply do not have to lend out.

If you have ever called a dean's office, chances are you were told he or she was in a meeting, out of the office or even out of the area. College deans have a number of responsibilities that often send them traveling around the world.

Deans are responsible for budgeting, hiring, reviewing faculty, course curriculum and the wellbeing of students as they work toward their degrees - duties which sometimes require travel.

Scantron exams for math classes:

(a) are easier to grade for instructors than penciled-out computations.

(b) are a time-honored way of doing things at Southwestern College.

(c) should be eliminated according to a progressive group of math instructors.

(d) will probably not be going anywhere in the near future.

Do not be alarmed by a possible enrollment-fee increase of at least $6 per unit sometime next year for California community colleges.

As of press time, there is no official news release about the fees returning $26 per unit-a price last paid in the summer of 2007-but there has been a speculation it will rise to $30 as soon as July 1 of next year.

CSEA rally criticizes raise for president

Southwestern College Governing Board members faced an overflow crowd of faculty, classified employees and students upset about its decision to raise the salary of President Dr. Raj K. Chopra by 7.9 percent at a time when classes are being eliminated and academic programs are being cut.
